How I study Korean Now - Language Learning Tips

A few years ago, I made a post about how I am studying Korean and gave you all some tips on how to study a new language. Years of studying and being met with frustration I have completely well about 70-80% changed the way I study Korean.

As you learn a new language you can tell whether something is working for you or if you need to switch things up. I am completely honest in my failures and successes; some things just simply didn’t work for me anymore. Feel free to go back to the original post and see how much has changed.

I would also love to hear your suggestions when it comes to learning a new language feel free to comment below and let me know your strategies.

Siwon School

I took a Korean for Starters Course at Siwon School. This was a paid course and I bought the 3 in 1 package which has all 3 levels of the Course. I have to say after mostly using Duolingo and not understanding a lot of the grammar rules this course gave me the aha moment and I learned so much. I am really glad that I went through it, I wish they had more courses for learning Korean that are in English but still very happy with the course itself.

Verbling

I now have a Korean teacher, we have been meeting weekly for the last 3 months now. It’s still relatively fresh and new but I am 100% sure this was the right decision to go ahead and meet with a Korean teacher. Verbling has many different teachers for different languages and you can have a test lesson with a teacher to see if they are a fit for you. If they are you can book more classes with them. This is, however, also paid and not free but I was just so stuck that I needed someone to help me get going, plus it’s hard for me nowadays to sit down and study on my own, I always feel like there are hundreds of other things I need to be doing. Having a set time and date where I meet with a person online really works for me. The resource my teacher is using with me is the Sogang Korean Textbook.

TTMIK

Talk to me in Korean helped me a lot once I started to distance myself more from Duolingo. One of the main things that I still struggle with is Vocabulary. I can read Korean just fine but struggle knowing what the words mean so even now with my teacher I use My first 500 KoreanWords to help with my Vocabulary. I also use the book My weekly KoreanVocabulary.  TTMIK is worth checking out, their textbooks are really great. TTMIK used to be free but you now need to have a subscription to access the courses.

Korean TV shows

I still watch Kdrama and other TV shows however I watch them way more leisurely nowadays. It’s more fun when there are things that I understand than when I tried using it to study. It’s more of a yay feeling when I understand sentences than trying to look up words I don’t know. It feels less stressful to watch dramas now and I enjoy them way more.

KPOP songs

I still listen to KPOP daily but just like the TV shows it’s more that I listen to them because I like it rather than just for the pure reason of using it to study.

As you can see it has changed a lot. I still think that Duolingo and Korean from Zero are great starter materials and have the potential to have you learn the language fluently. I mean there are so many people that mainly use Duolingo who have done amazingly. I am not saying that how I used to study is not going to work, no it can work for you! I simply was at the point where self-study wasn’t working anymore, now with a teacher I make time for studying and am less likely to cancel or reschedule, because not only is it my time but also someone else's time.

Look at both posts, try different ways of learning a new language and make sure it works for you. We all learn differently and there are so many different options out there.
