How I am learning Korean- Language Learning Tips

As I have mentioned before I am currently learning Korean. Even though I lived in Korea I didn't pick up a lot of the language, I was able to get by in the stores and traveling by train but couldn't have a full conversation in Korean. Kind of the downside of living right next to a military post on top of me not feeling well 98% of the time due to my pregnancy and me staying at home most of the time.
Do I regret not picking it up back then? I absolutely am. But that doesn't mean  I can't learn it now.

Also, you can apply the way I am learning pretty much to any language you choose to learn.

First off I do want to say that when I first started learning Korean I made the personal mistake of trying to use the romanization which was really a mistake because I kept focusing on the romanization instead of focusing on the characters. Which made me give up for a bit but when I started back up I made the decision to learn the alphabet and learn to sound it out rather than to use the romanization. The problem with the romanization is that it literally writes out the way you would write it in English, however, it is said much differently a lot of times.
So my first suggestion would be to get the alphabet down and sound the word out yourself. This is way more effective and you will start recognizing letter combinations

I also want to mention that Korean is one of those languages that you need to work on every day otherwise you start forgetting little thinks, especially the alphabet and certain letter compositions!

Duolingo

Duolingo is a website that I use every single day. I at least try to get 20xp on the days that I am busy but try to do a much as I can on the days that I have more free time.
It definitely helps and the continuous repetition helps anchor it in your mind. There are a lot of languages that Duolingo has and I think they are still expanding as well.

Korean from Zero

Korean from Zero is actually a really good book to help you and it helps you make connections to word composition and shows you other words you can then build up to from what you have already learned. They also have a website where you can get the material for free.

Korean Dungeon

Korean Dungeon is a cute learning game where it will give you a few words. Your objective is to find the right meaning and depending on how fast you get the answer right the more damage your enemy gets. So it definitely trains you on recognizing the words, you can have romanization on but I suggest not to do that for reasons I have mentioned above.
I also know that they have this for Japanese as well but unsure about other languages.

Korean Tv Shows

I don't really watch any US TV anymore, I always multitask on my computer and the things that I always watch are Korean TV Shows from Dramas, variety shows to Korean Movies. Let's eat is definitely one of my favorites! There is a huge list of shows I watch. If you want me to make a separate post I will. But I think watching shows in Korean helps you learn that's how I did it with learning English as well. You will pick up on the words that are repeated more frequently and learn their meaning as well as you will be able to hear the sentence structure and be able to apply it yourself. Definitely give it a shot and if you don't feel like starting out with dramas start out with kids shows.

Korean songs

I don't think it's a secret that I listen to KPOP, listening can definitely help you understand but you know what songs can definitely help you start out? Children's songs! Yes! Don't look at me weird haha I will add a song that my daughter and I sing all the time but it helps you learn simple words.

Whatever it is that you think you need to do to succeed in learning your language, do it! Even if it is reading children's books or watching children's shows! If that is what helps you go right ahead, don't think about what other people will think of you because you are the one who is bettering themselves.

There will be times where it will seem hard or you think you can't do it but don't give up keep pushing through it! You can do it! Hwaiting! 화이팅 !!!

xoxo, Nikki
