A song that makes me cry
I want to
share a song with you that is very dear to my heart. It makes me cry every time
because we used parts of the lyrics in my mom's death announcement in the paper.
I know this got heavy real fast. But I believe that sometimes we do have to be
vulnerable, and I believe today is the day for me.
In September
we it was my mom's 23rd anniversary of her death. I can’t believe
that it has been that long. I miss her every day.
The song is
by Herbert Grönemeyer and it’s called Mensch.
I will have a link to the English lyrics here; due to
copyright reasons, I am not going to copy them into this post.
The song is about the process of grief after the singer’s wife
has passed away. The lyrics
'Cause we love
'Cause we live
I miss you, oh
'Cause we love
We live
I miss you
hit home pretty badly. The human is human or man is man
because we love, we live, and we miss. Grief is deep, just like an iceberg; we
only see a little bit of it, but there is so much more underneath it. Grief isn’t
over in a month or a week. It can take years, and after 23 years, I am still grieving.
I think I have never fully let myself grieve and just kept pushing the thought
away.
I can’t ever get through the song without crying. I have a hard time just reading the lyrics. I hope that even if you don’t speak German that the song, the music itself can convey the feeling of the lyrics.
