The holiday with the most meaning to me

The holiday with the most meaning to me has to be Christmas. I hold so many memories surrounding Christmas. So many traditions that to this day I still love Christmas, and besides Halloween, it is my favorite holiday.

Let me tell you a little bit about what Christmas looked like in our household when I was a kid. My family never ate meat on Christmas. For Christmas dinner, we would have a starter of mushroom soup. For the main course, it would be potatoes, homemade sauerkraut, and carp. My mom would get fresh carp and then work on scaling the fish as well as filleting it. My mom made a lot of things homemade, and making sauerkraut months in advance was always a fun thing for us to do together. I still hold those memories dear to my heart.

However, we just didn’t eat dinner whenever we wanted; our tradition was that we waited for the first star to eat. Now I know that it was the North Star because it was the brightest star in the sky. While I put myself and star watch duty, I would also sing songs to hopefully make the snow fall because you know, white Christmas and all :) Sometimes it worked and other times it didn’t, but when it did, I was the most ecstatic and was sure that I was the reason that the snow started to fall.

After dinner, it was tradition for my brother and me to do the dishes; some years, my dad was with us, and others my mom. The door to the kitchen would always be closed, and we would listen to Christmas songs on the radio. While we were washing dishes, the other parent would come in, in a hurry, calling us to come quickly to the living room because the Christmas angel had come. Under our little tree were gifts for my brother and me, and we spent the rest of the evening opening gifts and playing with the new toys we got.

The fun part about Christmas wasn’t just the gifts; it was also the fact that we got to stay up late to go to the midnight mass at church. As a kid, staying up way past midnight was, of course, the cherry on top.

As you can see, Christmas has a lot of memories for me and, therefore, has to be the most meaningful holiday to me. What holiday holds the most meaning for you? Let me know in the comments.
