Time and Memories

This month, my best friend of 32 years messaged me and wished me a happy graduation anniversary. When she told me the number, I couldn’t believe it. 20 years. It has been TWENTY YEARS since I graduated! Where has time gone?? It is unbelievable, but with us messaging, I realized how fragile memories are. She was watching a video of us on our last day of school, and she was intermittently messaging me, describing what was happening. Some things I remembered, and then there were amazing things that happened that I just cannot remember. Those memories have been washed away by the sea of time.

I believe memories are amazing; we hold so many of them over such a vast time, but I believe that maybe a little bit we get complacent and think they will always be there; however, that is not the case.

My mom has been gone for 23 years now, and goodness, just writing this out makes me tear up. However, because it has been so long, I have started to forget certain things. I don’t really remember how her voice sounded. I still remember what she looked like, though it is slowly fading away. When it is something so sensitive in a way, it is scary to see in real time just what time can do to our memories.

They get fuzzy, and small details simply fade away and are nowhere to be found.

It just took me by surprise how small and even big things can disappear, which is so sad and scary. I fear that one day I will wake up and, thinking of my mom, I just won’t remember what she looked like unless I look at pictures.

Which now has me thinking about the quote “ Time heals all wounds.” Does time really heal them, or do we simply forget that they are there? Can we then say that they are healed? Or is it just a saying to make us feel better about the memory stealer called time??

Sorry for this unusual melancholy post, but it had me thinking a bit. As you are reading this, I am probably still contemplating time and memories and the effects time has on our memories. Off to looking for research papers, ha ha
